What participants said ... Power of Personal Story Workshops for Senior Social Club

What surprised you?

I was expecting a boring lecture from an ex-teacher. Surprise. I met an interesting person.

Surprised to find myself in a workshop.

In-depth questioning

The extent of the interaction.

I didn't know what to expect but I was certainly surprised that it took such an interesting direction.

What did you learn about yourself and others?

That others are not so dull as I had thought before!
That we are all different

I asked some questions to which I have wanted answers for a long time.

I found that others are often quite willing to talk about their life experiences, if someone is willing to ask.
Some of my stories are funny. It is exhilarating to make your opposite number laugh

Everyone has a story.

All sorts of things I didn't know.

That communication enriches.

That I am too private.

What was new for you?
Hope.

That questions are easier than answers.

The idea of using story to help reveal the character of both the storyteller and the listener.

An opportunity to get to know two strangers.

Case of being engaging - right questions allowing engagement without being too forthright.

The whole topic and how it was presented.

Would you like to have another session like this?

I think that Probus would benefit from another session of this kind. It lets people think differently about an experience and value personal experience more. We are no longer hesitant to speak to strangers

The Club surely needs more interaction.
People like nothing better than talking about themselves

How could you use this session in your club and in your life?

Conversational skills.
Reinforce an interest that might be new and unexpected.

Makes it easy to ask questions from strangers.
Be more inquisitive about the world around me.
The importance of listening. Listening is an art, which more of us should cultivate.

Why did you enjoy it

It was an unexpected approach.

Learning more about those I partnered with, and about myself.

Our leader never stopped smiling and gave us a lift for few minutes.

Good conversations.

Sharing

I was able to apply your ideas to my ideas.

Initiating conversation was not optional but compulsory.
